Cast bronze with a brown patina, on a wooden base, 1981. 355x240x255 mm; 14x9 1/2x10 inches. Initialed "EC" and dated at the rear lower edge. From the first part of the total edition of 9, which was later completed in 2006.

Provenance: private Washington collection.

Two other casts of this bust have been exhibited and illustrated in the exhibition catalogues Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A Fifty-Year Retrospective, the Neuberger Museum of Art, 1998, and Something All Our Own, the Grant Hill Collection of African-American Art, Duke University Press, 2004. There is another in the collection of the Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, MI. This is the first known bronze of the artist to come to auction.

The sitter is Glory Van Scott, performer, dancer and educator, who gained fame as the principal dancer with the Katherine Dunham, Agnes DeMille, and Talley Beatty dance companies and as a performer on Broadway in the 1960s and 70s. Van Scott is also the subject of a 1986 print by Catlett, lot 98 in this auction.
