ELIZABETH CATLETT (1915 - )
Sharecropper.

Color linoleum cut on thin cream wove paper, circa 1952. 452x425 mm; 17 5/8x16 1/2 inches, 1 3/4 to 2 inch margins. "Federal Ledger" watermark. Signed, titled, dated "1970" and numbered 20/60 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by the artist and the Taller Gráfica Popular, Mexico City, in 1970. A superb impression of this important print, with dark colors and all the fine lines printing clearly.

Sharecropper is one of Elizabeth Catlett's most celebrated and recognized images. The original block or matrix for this linoleum cut has been given various dates but the print's earliest recorded date is from its 2nd prize in graphics in the Atlanta University Annual Exhibition in 1952 (with the title Negro Woman). It was later published as Cosechadora de algodón in the journal Artes de México in 1957. Herzog p. 105.
