Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University in Washington, DC. Elizabeth Catlett became an honorary member, and then later received the Civil Rights award, Women Making a Difference, from the sorority in St. Louis in 1994. Subsequently, the organization commissioned Catlett to design Legacy, which she based on Standing Woman with Blue Eyes, a mahogany and turquoise sculpture also from 1994. The statue is now given to honorees in the areas of civil rights, politics and government.
