ELIZABETH CATLETT (1915 - )
Malcolm X Habla por Nosotros.

Color linoleum cut, 1969. 885x690 mm; 37 3/4x27 1/4 inches, full margins. First edition (of 2). Signed, titled and dated in pencil, lower right. Numbered 1/35 in pencil, lower left. Printed and published by the artist, Mexico City. A very good impression with vibrant colors of this scarce and important print.

The upper part of this image incorporates multiple printings of the block I am the Negro Woman, part of the artist's The Negro Woman series, 1946-47.

We have found no other impressions at auction in the past 20 years. In 1969, the print won First Purchase Prize at the National Print Salon in Mexico City, and was purchased by the National Institute of Fine Arts, Mexico. There is an artist's proof (numbered I/X) in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and one in the artist's collection. A later edition of 60 was printed with different colors on different paper in 2004. After Catlett's Sharecropper, Malcolm X Habla para Nosotros is the artist's most iconic image, a great representation of the troubled times of the late 1960s.
