Polished, cast bronze, 1972. 318x203x203 mm; 12 1/2x8x8 inches. Incised "EC" and dated at the rear, lower edge.
Provenance: private New York collection, acquired directly from the artist, 1973.
Another cast, dated 1973, was exhibited and illustrated in the catalogue Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A Fifty-Year Retrospective, the Neuberger Museum of Art, 1998, on p. 75. Catlett also made a 1998 version in marble entitled Head of Man. This is only the third bronze by the artist to come to auction.
