This stunning portrait by Elizabeth Catlett in bronze has a distinctive black patina. Her other casts of Glory that we have located all have a copper-colored patina. Two other casts of this bust were exhibited in the exhibitions Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A Fifty-Year Retrospective, the Neuberger Museum of Art, 1998, and Something All Our Own, the Grant Hill Collection of African-American Art, Nasher Museum of Art, 2004. There is another in the collection of the Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, MI.

The sitter is Glory Van Scott, performer, dancer and educator, who gained fame as the principal dancer with the Katherine Dunham, Agnes DeMille, and Talley Beatty dance companies and as a performer on Broadway in the 1960s and 70s. Ms. Van Scott was also the subject of a 1986 linoluem cut by Elizabeth Catlett.
