Rebozo IV.

Cast bronze with a green and brown patina on a wood base, 1965. Approximately 286x140x152 mm; 11 1/4x5 1/2x6 inches (not including the base).

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, Mexico; private collection, Mexico; thence by descent to a private collection.

Rebozo is a very good example of Elizabeth Catlett's mid-career work - incorporating Mexican and modernist forms in this seated figure. Catlett made two different versions in bronze - one in 1952, with a brown patina, and this version in 1965, plus a large limestone sculpture in 1957. Casts of Rebozo IV were included in the 1972 solo exhibition Elizabeth Catlett: Prints and Sculpture, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, and in the 1998 Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A Fifty-Year Retrospective, Nueberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York.
