Untitled (Head of a Woman) is a wonderful example of a unique work from Elizabeth Catlett's mid-career period. Works in oil - paintings and monotype - by Elizabeth Catlett are very scarce. We have located or found records of less than a dozen other paintings in private collections - most are small portraits in oil from her 1940s New York period. In the later Untitled (Head of a Woman), we have a fascinating and very rare moment of experimentation within the oil medium by Catlett. A sculptural quality can be found in the various mark-making and the flattening of the forms - similar to her iconic linoleum cut, Sharecropper, circa 1952. This is the first unique work on paper by the artist from the 1950s that we have located.
