Colwell (1881-1954) was born in Michigan and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She learned to make color woodcuts from Bror J. O. Nordfeldt in his studio in South Chicago. Colwell exhibited widely from the 1910s through the 1930s, showing (and winning awards for her prints) in San Francisco, New York, Boston, Chicago and Rome.
