Additional Details

Ellery (1727-1820) Signer from Rhode Island, member of Congress 1776-86, Collector of Customs at Newport 1790-1820. Throughout the 18th century, Newport was considered the hub of the Notorious Triangle, the trade of rum distilled in Rhode Island to West Africa for slaves to be sold in the West Indies for mollasses to make the rum. Rhode Island was the first state to free its slaves in 1774. Although most states ended the slave trade by about 1800, the trade into America legally continued until Congress abolished it in 1808.<
