"The ten photographs in this portfolio are a cross section of my "personal pictures." They represent the more thoughtful onehundredtwentyfifths of a second (on the average) of my photographic life.
These pictures were mostly snapped "on my way to the studio; that is, they were not done with special purpose or with preconception. In my particular case, that is the way I respond to the subjects that make up my ultimate photographic inventory. Luckily, visual humor and pathos, as I perceive them, are ever present and quickly recognizable. (I believe that they probably exist even in a meeting of the Supreme Soviet.) So my task, as I see it, is to formalize that recognition by recording it with minimum manipulation, hopefully with some style and insight; and by respecting and taking the subject matter very seriously, while at the same time not taking it seriously at all.
...but most of all, I believe that a reasonable picture is worth more than 163 words." --Elliott Erwitt, July, 1974
