Fulani Herdsman and a Young Man of Kano.

Conte crayon and ink on cream wove paper, circa 1965-70. 457x305 mm; 18x12 inches. Signed and inscribed "Kano, Nigeria" in conte crayon, lower left. With a typed label on the backing paper, supplying the title.

Provenance: gift from the artist; Ruby W. Davis; thence by descent to her estate. Rudy Dee wrote a forward to Elton Fax's 1972 portfolio ELTON C. FAX: Black and Beautiful, 10 lithograph prints of pencil drawings.

Fax illustrated over 30 books and magazine articles. In 1960, he published his first book West African Vignettes. Fax published his most notable work, a biography of Marcus Garvey, in the 1972. His work has been shown in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York.
