ELYSE ASHE LORD. "For in and out, above, about, below, `Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show. . ." Stage design illustrating the Phantom scene, Verse 46, of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, for an unknown production. Watercolor, ink, and gouache on paper. 345x242 mm; 13 1/2x9 1/2 inches, framed to 20x15 1/2 inches. Unsigned, but verse written in Lord's hand on card mounted to verso. Small, clean tear to center left image. Tipped to window matte and framed.
The full text reads: "For in and out, above, about, below,'Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show, Play'd in a Box whose Candle is the Sun, Round which we Phantom Figures come and go." As Lord did not illustrate the classic Persian poem, it is believed that this work is a proposed set design for a stage adaptation.
