With the First World War over, American soldiers began returning home (340,000 troops returned in June of 1919 alone); finding employment for them was of utmost importance to the Department of Labor. In this image, a soldier is framed, literally, within a window of opportunity. Against an industrial cityscape and arable fields, the doughboy is removing his uniform in anticipation of all the work waiting for him. Rawls 274, Borkan p. 187.
