The famed car designer Ettore Bugatti began designing rail cars early in the 1930s. By 1934, the Bugatti trains had captured a world rail speed record of 196 kilometers an hour. Schefer, who worked exclusively for automobile and train companies, was nicknamed "the painter of machines."
