EMIL CARDINAUX (1877-1936) JUNGFRAU RAILWAY / BERNESE OBERLAND. SWITZERLAND. 1925.
40 1/4x25 1/2 inches, 102 1/4x64 3/4 cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears and creases at edges; repaired pin holes in corners.
As a student, Cardinaux trained in Munich with Franz von Stuck. In addition to his prolific poster work, he was also a landscape painter. He designed three other posters for the Jungfrau (the earliest in 1910) and at least one illustrated brochure. The history of sled dogs in the Jungfrau dates back to 1913, when Inuit dogs from Greenland were brought in to help supply the men building the railway. Once the railway was complete, the dogs stayed up the mountain to provide rides for tourists, as depicted on this poster. This is the English version. This is the first time this poster has come up for auction at Swann. Alpi 109 (var).
