EMIL CARDINAUX (1877-1936) PALACE HOTEL ST. MORITZ. 1922.
50 1/2x36 inches, 128x91 1/2 cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Condition B+ / A-: minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Evocative, painterly, almost impressionistic, Cardinaux depicts an alpine golf round and a picnic. This is the second of two in a series he did for the famous resort hotel. The other, a winter scene designed in 1920, depicts skaters around an ice rink. In both, his compelling composition captures the idle grace and elegance of different seasons at this alpine retreat. The laconic tableaux do not directly promote the hotel being advertised; both project a style and attitude that was clearly meant to reflect the lifestyle of the elite patrons of the establishment, and to draw others of their ilk to the Alps. Cardinaux 74, Voyage p. 106.
