EMIL LÉVY (DATES UNKNOWN) ALCAZAR D'HIVER / SPECTACLE-CONCERT. 1876.
23 1/4x16 1/8 inches, 59x41 cm. Emile Lévy, Paris.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears; restoration in margins; unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds.
A very early image for the Alcazar d'Hiver, a Parisian Café-concert which opened in 1858. The show being so capably advertised has a Turkish theme, catering to the contemporary public's fascination with the Ottoman Empire. The masterful use of coloring is unusually good for such an early poster, and the use of the Turk's sword to present some of the typography is especially progressive. Émile Lévy was one of the most prolific printers, producing posters for Paris' performers and performance halls. Cafe Concert cover and 9.
