EMIL NOLDE
Kopf mit Pfeife, E. N. (Selbstbildnis).

Lithograph printed in blueish black on chamois wove paper, 1907. 405x285 mm; 16x111/4 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed in pencil, lower right.

Though Schiefler/Mosel call for an edition of 200 printed in black for this print, of which only 20 were numbered, it seems likely that fewer impressions actually were made. We find only 7 impressions at auction during the past 20 years. The current work is likely a proof.

Like many other German Expressionist artists, Nolde (1867-1956) was a boldly innovative printmaker who frequently made self portraits. In this wonderfully dark and pensive self portrait, one of 8 in his printed oeuvre, there is an affinity with several of Rembrandt's self portraits, particularly lots 1 and 2 in the current catalogue. Schiefler/Mosel 5.
