Orlik (1870-1932) was a Czech painter and printmaker. He was born in Prague and was steeped in the city's turn-of-the-century thriving avant-garde art scene. Orlik studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he developed an interest in etching, with which he became extremely proficient, producing intensely detailed and nuanced prints. He became a member of the Vienna Secession, a group of avant-garde artists who sought to challenge the artistic conventions of the day. He was also a prolific book illustrator, creating designs for works by Goethe, Schiller, Kafka and other famous authors.
