EMIL PREETORIUS (1883-1973) EMIL U. WILLY PREETORIUS / BRAKL'S MODERNE KUNSTHANDLUNG. 1911.
383/4x26 inches. Consee, Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image. Paper.
Circa 1908, Preetorius designed his first poster to promote a show of his own works at this Berlin Gallery. That poster, quite similar to this image, employed a diagonal layout. However, in the earlier poster the man is seen approaching the viewer, while here he is seen walking away. Also, this exhibition was both for Emil and his brother Willy, (who was also a painter). Utilizing flat tones and white outlining, the man's face, hands and shoes are saturated in color and the text is arranged at the bottom of the poster against a dark background. Preetorius described his style as romantischeironie (Romantic Irony). MDR vol. 7, np.
