Emil Preetorius was a prolific illustrator and teacher who, along with Paul Renner (the creator of Universe Type), founded the Munich School for Illustration and Book Design. He was one of the founding members of Munich's Die Sechs. While his style could lean towards the overtly cartoon-like, in a manner comparable to the work of the French posterist Gustave-Henri Jossot, Preetorius actually had command of a much more sophisticated use of outlining and representation. Licht und Schatten (Light and Shadow) was a progressive Berlin art magazine. Preetorius designed three different posters for the publication. DFP III 2590.
