EMILE SEVELINGE (DATES UNKNOWN) AMERICAN STERLING CYCLES. 1900.
24 3/4x16 1/2 inches, 63x42 cm. Chardin, Paris.
Condition A / A-: minor creases at edges and in image.
This serene, charming image is an exception to the majority of extravagant bicycle ads that were designed during this time. The poster does not depict a bicycle at all, but rather shows a lovely woman, lost in daydreams. In a deceptively simple and enormously creative manner, those dreams are made clear to the viewer by the Sterling brochures she is reading and the sinuous road that is visible out the window behind her.
