Slow Time is part of a significant body of 1980s work by Emma Amos depicting African-American women in bathing suits or swimming. Printed at the studio of Kathy Caraccio, Amos's monotypes use similar collage elements and mixed media as found in her paintings on fabric. Other works in this series of swimmers include the etchings Sand Tan, 1980 and To Sit, 1981 and the painting Arched Swimmer, 1987.
