Beauty is part of Emma Amos' series of images of strong female figures in silhouette and on a non-Western support of hanging fabric. Emma Amos has sought to deconstruct traditional representations of beauty with her depictions of women. She also embraced experimental techniques as a painter, master printmaker and weaver - here with an unusual use of acrylic in monotype. In her article on the artist, Sharon Patton describes the process as a stencil hand-cut by Amos that was inked and printed with master-printer Kathy Carracio. Amos' idea for this hybrid technique came from the sculptor Terry Adkins, who had described to her the painting of acrylic mediums on silk as a block-out for screenprinting. Patton p. 41.
