"DIXIE": COMPLETE MUSIC AND LYRICS EMMETT, DANIEL D. Autograph Manuscript Inscribed and Signed, twice, to Dewitt Miller, fair copy of the complete music and lyrics for his "Dixie's Land," notated on printed staves. The music and first verse, written on the rectos of the first and second leaves; the remaining 5 verses written on the recto and verso of the second leaf. The inscription, at upper and lower edges of first page: "After the original copy composed by me, in the year 1859 in the city of New York. Daniel D. Emmett. / . . . This copy of 'Dixie,' music and words, was made by me, for Dewitt Miller, Dec 20th 1900. / Daniel Decatur Emmett / Author of 'Dixie.'" 2 1/2 pages, folio, written on two separate sheets; moderate toning and faint foxing to first page overall, some scattered chipping at edges, minor scattered soiling, remnants of mounting at upper edge of terminal page. Additional Details

The version of "Dixie" in the present lot includes the original first verse, which was omitted when the song was first published, because of fears that it might have controversial religious implications: "Dis worl' was made in jiss six days, / An' finish'd up in various ways; / . . . Day den made Dixie trim an' nice, / But Adam call'd it 'Paradise.'"
