ENEA VICO (after Rosso Fiorentino)
Battle of Lapiths and Centaurs (Abduction of Hippodaemia).

Engraving, 1542. 283x420 mm; 11 1/4x16 1/2 inches. Eagle watermark. Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark.

According to The British Museum, this engraving is related to the fresco of the same subject, painted by Rosso Fiorentino in the Gallery of François I at Fontainebleau. Bartsch identifies the subject as the battle between the Lapiths and the centaurs; however, while the scene certainly shows a banquet being interrupted by the abduction of a woman, there are no centaurs. Another interpretation of the subject, put forth by Giorgio Vasari in the 1550s, is the abduction of Helen of Troy. Bartsch 30.
