first edition. Episcopius (or Bisschop, 1583-1643) was the principal early expositor of the theological ideas of Jacobus Arminius espoused by the Dutch Remonstrant movement. His Apologia was a defense of Arminian tenets, which conflicted with Calvinist doctrine, written in response to the censure of the Remonstrant Confession by the Theological Faculty of Leiden.
