ERICH HECKEL
Ihre beim Essen.

Drypoint, 1914. 190x143 mm; 71/2x53/4 inches, full margins. Edition of 100. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Ex-collection Alfred Hess (Lugt supplement 2796a, verso). A superb impression of this early print.

Heckel (1883-1970) was a founding member of Die Brücke, an important and early German Expressionist artist group whose aim was to represent nature as untouched as possible from civilization. He was also, like fellow Brücke founders Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a prolific printmaker who created more than 800 etchings, woodcuts and lithographs. In the current work, produced after he had moved to Berlin and adopted more melancholic, somber themes in his work, he has depicted 3 poor men eating--a bleak slice of everyday urban life that has its roots in Rembrandt's beggar and genre etchings. Dube 129.
