Additional Details

Ericsson (1803-1889) was a Swedish-born mechanical engineer and inventor interested in engines and mechanisms based on steam. His designs lost out to the Stephensons in a steam engine competition for the Liverpool and Manchester Railroad. He later moved on to ship design and now is best known as the designer of the ironclad USS Monitor.
