ERIK HANSON (20TH CENTURY)

French Bluto Acrylic on canvas. Signed, Erik Hanson, dated, May 7 2017, and inscribed as titled on verso. 305x229 mm; 12x9 inches. 2017.

In Hanson's series, "Two Years of Bluto," he explores our fascination with the hyper-masculine protagonist portrayed by Bluto in the Popeye comics. We are drawn to the over emphasized characteristics of gender stereotypes while also recognizing the fragility and conflicts these images can induce. John Hughes' 1985 comedy thriller, "Weird Science," draws a similar scene when Gary, (Anthony Michael Hall), and Wyatt, (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) are designing their ideal woman. The initial hyper-sexualized concepts are explored and rejected before they "upload" the preferred template. Hanson exhibited his Bluto Series, "Two Years of Bluto," at Marlborough Contemporary Gallery, NY, February twenty-third through March twenty-ninth, 2019.
