ERNEST CRICHLOW (1914 - 2005)
Cissy.

Lithograph, 1952. 390x285 mm; 15 1/2x11 1/2 inches, wide margins. Signed, titled, dated and dedicated "for Irene, Joe & Moe" in pencil, lower margin. Marginal mat stain, adhesive tape residue at extreme edges. A very good, dark impression of this very scarce print.

We have not found another impression of this print at auction in the past 20 years.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ernest Crichlow became a painter during the Harlem Renaissance, and a printmaker during the WPA. He taught at the Harlem Community Center, and worked for the Greensboro Art Project in North Carolina. A social-realist, Crichlow made his mark depicting the racial conflicts and violence blacks faced, and poignant portraits of African-American youth.
