ERNEST H. SHEPARD. "Their search for Small." Pen-and-ink on board, illustration for page 39 of A. A. Milne's "House at Pooh Corner," London, 1928. 367x267 mm; 14 1/2x10 1/2 inches, full sheet (illustration is roughly 241x177 mm; 9 1/2x7 inches). Signed in ink, in image, lower left, titled in pencil, lower margin, and signed again in full on verso, in brown ink: "Ernest H. Shepard / Shamley Green/ Guildford." Recto bears marginal toning and matte burn to outer edges of image, a 2-inch marginal stain along left edge of board, and penciled dimensions on lower board; verso bears old glue stains in lower margin, archival tissue paper on edges, and label in corner (Newman's Artist Drawing Table, 24 Soho Square London, W) with "H. P. C" [House at Pooh Corner] penned in Shepard's hand, scuffed.
This picture illustrates the line from Chapter Three: "While Piglet was dreaming this happy dream, and Pooh was wondering again whether it was fourteen or fifteen, the Search for Small was still going on all over the Forest." Consequently the beloved characters Rabbit and Owl are depicted prominently as they seek Very Small Beetle.
