ERNEST MAINDRON (1838-1908) LES AFFICHES ÉTRANGÈRES ILLUSTRÉES. Bound volume of 62 lithographs in color and 150 in black and white 1897.
12 1/4x9 inches, 31x23 cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: minor wear at edges; abrasions on volume.
The third in an early series of three volumes about posters. The first two volumes were dedicated to posters printed in France. This volume, dedicated solely to posters printed outside of France (Germany, Austria, England, America, Belgium and Japan) was touted as the "indispensable complement to the history of posters" (preface i). Compiled by Boudet, the book consists of essays contributed by various foreign authors, creating a collective work examining the poster art of major countries where the art form flourished. It is richly illustrated in both black and white and color (the color lithography was printed by Chaix, under the supervision of Jules Cheret, the director of the firm). With only 1050 copies printed, this book is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
