ERNEST MONTAUT (1879-1936) LE PNEU MICHELIN. 1905.
621/2x46 inches. Revon & Cie, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses in lower right margin and corner; repaired tear in top margin; minor discoloration in margins.
Montaut dedicated his work to depicting car racing and aviation. He is mostly known for a series of pochoirs that he printed in his own studio, which are literally a history of the first rallies, competitions and races with cars and airships. Given his background, and ability to depict movement and speed, it was no wonder that he was commissioned to design posters in those same fields. Here speed is of the essence, as Montaut illustrates Heath, beating "the fastest train in the world over a 600-km stretch by 30 minutes." George Heath was a great, early American car racer, who won many competitions in 1904 and 1905. The poster is not advertising the Panhard car that Heath is driving, but rather the tires it is driving on; Michelin. Auto Show I 26, Michelin p. 8.
