ERNEST MONTAUT BAYARD. Circa 1915.
611/2x443/4 inches. Marbileau, Paris.
Condition B+: overpainting, restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
Montaut dedicated his work to depicting car racing and aviation. He is mostly known for a series of pochoirs that he printed in his own studio, which are literally a history of the first rallies, competitions and races with cars and airships. Given his background, and ability to depict movement and speed, it was no wonder that he was commissioned to design posters in those same fields. Here, combining both of his favorite subject, figures in a car, highlighted in red, are speeding down a gray road below a zeplin in the pink sky; lettering in red and purple.
