ERNST A. HEINIGER (1909-1993) WELTAUSSTELLUNG DER PHOTOGRAPHIE. 1952.
49 3/4x35 1/4 inches, 126 1/2x89 1/2 cm. Gebr. Fretz, Zurich.
Condition A- / B+: minor repaired tears, creases, abrasions and time-staining at edges; minor creases along vertical and horizontal folds; minor loss in lower left corner.
Already an accomplished artist, designer, photographer and cinematographer, Heiniger was an apparent choice for inclusion in the World Exhibition of Photography in Lucern in 1952, the first exhibition wholly devoted to the medium in Switzerland. Organized by Emil Bührer, then editor of the photography magazine Camera, the exhibition included 2500 photographs ranging in time period and subject matter which "succeeded in giving an exhaustive review of photography's role in modern civilization" (Creative Photography p. 22). Utilizing his interdisciplinary talents, Heiniger's typically Swiss, avant-garde design places a photographic eye behind a geometric color-blocked lens, highlighting the artistry and coherence of both mediums, while using the combination to reference the viewer's gaze on art and the artist's view through their lens.
