Hodel and his father (also named Ernst) opened the Alpineum in Lucern in 1901. The museum, a monument to the naturalistic movement sweeping Europe at that time, houses over 500 square meters of paintings of the Swiss Alps, which the two men painted. The museum is open through the present day.
