ERNST WIEMANN (1878-1912) BURGEFF / GRUEN. Circa 1901.
18 1/4x25 1/4 inches, 47x64 cm. Kunstdruckerei Kunstlerbond Karlsruhe.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; minor restored losses along left edge and corner; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
A classic German pre-war image, done in the prevailing style of flat colors and no outlines, with the addition of clever use of shadow. A painter who only designed a few posters, Wieman brought his artistic sensibility to the graphic realm. He portrays a man sitting on the grass, pouring drinks from a second bottle of champagne, for himself, as his picnic companion remains unseen outside of the frame of the poster. Burgeff Gruen was founded in 1837 making it one of the oldest Rheinland champagne brands. Now owned by Seagram's, Burgeff is still available on the market. DFP-III 3426.
