Additional Details

Erskine Nicol attained the rank of Academician in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1859, and was perhaps one of its most active members. The present work was likely painted in Edinburgh, pre-dating his move to London in 1862-63. He was very well-known for his figure and genre scenes, especially of Irish subjects.
