Slobodkina (1908-2002) experimented with her style in the 1930s, alternating between abstract and representational ideas which she learned during her studies at the National Academy of Design, New York (see lot 86), and Cubism, using flattened planes and abstract shapes. From 1934 she continued to create abstract works, such as Toys in the Attic, throughout her career and developed her style further to include collage elements.
