ETHEL MARS
Woman Holding a Child.

Watercolor over pencil with white heightening on paper. 392x318 mm; 15 1/4x12 1/2 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right recto.

Mars (1876-1959) was born in Springfield, Illinois, and studied at an early age at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Toward the end of 1905/beginning of 1906, Mars moved to Paris, settling permanently in France aside from returning briefly to the U.S. during World War I. This watercolor (and lots 85, 86, and 88) is typical of Mars' artistic work in France from the 1920s onward.
