EUGÈNE GRASSET (1841-1917) [L'ÉVENTAIL.] Decorative panel. 1900.
51x33 inches, 129 1/2x84 cm.
Condition B / B-: extensive creasing and abrasions in image; repaired tears and restoration in margins and image. Framed.
For the 1900 Exposition Universelle Grasset designed jewelry, stained glass and tapestries. He was also commissioned to design two decorative panels for the event. "They are his most successful lithographed panels, daring in the boldness of his colors, contrasting blues and greens with orange, yellow and black . . . Using the same colors in both he carefully balances them while yet remaining at his freest in his use of line. From a distance, the well defined outlines are clear, there is no muddy blending at the edges; yet seen close to there is an astonishing lack of 'stained glass' leading in the lines, which appear like thick brush strokes, retaining the spontaneity of a sketch" (Arwas p. 85). Murray-Robertson p. 188, Arwas p. 86.
