EUGENE CARRIERE (1849-1906) L'AURORE. 1897.
54 1/2x41 3/4 inches, 138 1/2x106 cm. P. Dupont, Paris.
Condition B: minor losses along vertical and horizontal folds; creases and abrasions in image.
L'Aurore was a radical newspaper founded in 1897. It is most famous for printing Emile Zola's "J'Accuse" during the Dreyfus Affair in 1898. Carriere was an important painter whose innovative and individual style defies classification. Of his few lithographs and posters, L'Aurore is Carriere's most classic and best known. Oddly reminiscent of Edvard Munch's The Scream, this image depicts a working class woman trying to make her way through the mist. If she is befuddled, overwhelmed or even terrified of the landscape around her, the implication is that L'Aurore will help delineate her path. DFP-II 132.
