EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) [LA VIOLONCELLISTE.] Circa 1898.
18x13 inches.
Condition A-: minor creases in margins; minor loss at top left edge.
A typical Grasset maiden, with extravagant Art Nouveau hair and dressed in a medieval-revival costume, is playing her cello in a beautiful outdoor setting. There is a horizontal banner running across the image as well as blank space along the right side, perhaps for text. Although Arwas doesn't illustrate this image, he does list it under "Decorative Panels," and mentions that it is "a woodcut design in 9 colors by the Gillot process." A similar image of a woman playing the cello was realized by Grasset in one of his stained-glass windows (see Arwas p. 17). Arwas p. 137 no. 46.
