EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) [L'ESTAMPE ET L'AFFICHE.]
25 1/4x19 inches, 65x48 cm.
Condition A-: creases in margins and image.
This charming, allegorical image depicts "the poster" threatening the "cabinet print" (seen carrying a portfolio of prints) with her bill poster brush. It is reminiscent of Pierre Bonnard's poster for L'Estampe et l'Affiche (see lot 83) delivering the same message, that the "artistic poster" was the youthful, buoyant force that would rejuvenate the art market, which had relied too long on "classic" prints. And, indeed, between 1895 and 1900, the poster was certainly ascendant, taking such a hold on the public that the term "affichomanie" (poster mania) was coined. Previously unrecorded, this is the only time a complete, fully-realized copy of this decorative panel has come to market (see Swann Art Nouveau Auction #2133, lot 59, for the incomplete trial proof of this image). It is an exquisite print in tender, flat colors. Rare. Not in Arwas.
