EUGENE OGÉ (1869-1936) LA MENTHE - PASTILLE. Circa 1904.
50 1/4x78 1/2 inches, 127 3/4x199 1/2 cm. P. Vercasson & Cie, [Paris.]
Condition B: replaced lower right corner and image; restored losses, repaired tears and overpainting in margins; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; foxing in image. Matted and framed.
Ogé designed three different posters for this mint-flavored liqueur. In 1909, he designed an image featuring the international tribunal in The Hague, where many world presidents and kings are making or breaking alliances and coalitions. In 1913, he revisited the same idea and merely updated the attendance, replacing those personages who had passed away with their contemporary replacements (including Wilhelm II and George V). He also included a new slogan, replacing the original "empassions the world," with the disturbingly optimistic "saved from the peril." Oge 240, p. 225, Art Nouveau p. 151, DFP-II 668, Negripub p. 120.
