The French pioneer of documentary photography Eugène Atget is best known for documenting the architecture and street scenes of Paris before their disappearance to modernization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work was rediscovered by American photographer Berenice Abbott and has since been celebrated for its historical importance.
