Delacroix (1798-1863) completed three murals over the span of several years for the church of St. Sulpice, Paris, in 1861, considered among the masterpieces of his oeuvre: Jacob Wrestling with the Angel, The Defeat of Satan by the Archangel Michael, and The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple in the Jerusalem. Additional pencil studies for these murals, like the current drawing, are in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and the Metropolitan Musuem of Art, New York.
