Additional Details

From the collection of Lee Marks.
Evans said about these photographs, taken on the Lexington Avenue line beginning in 1938: "The guard is down and the mask is off, even more than when in lone bedrooms (where there are mirrors). People''s faces are in naked repose down in the subway." Evans was accompanied by Helen Levitt, and took these images with a 35mm Contax tucked between the buttons of
his coat.
